Golf courses allowed to re-open from Wednesday

Golf courses in Staffordshire will be allowed to re-open on Wednesday after England Golf signalled its consent to do so following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on Sunday evening (May 10).

In his speech, Mr Johnson said that people in England are allowed an unlimited amount of exercise from May 13 onwards with a 60-page Government document stating that all outdoor sport must either be done alone, with members from the same household or with one other person from outside your household while attaining a two-metre distance at all times.

England Golf described the decision to re-open the courses as “difficult” and said that it is “seeking further clarification from the Government regarding other golf-related facilities.”

A spokesperson for England Golf said: “The UK Government has announced that golf will be able to resume in England on Wednesday, 13 May 2020.

Golfers can now start practicing their swing again

“It is important to stress that this remains an extremely difficult situation throughout the UK and we are acutely aware that many lives have been lost to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The effects of the virus will continue to be felt for a long time to come. As a sport we must work together to resume play responsibly as and when the relevant Government determines it is safe to do so.

“We must ensure that the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved from golfers, to club staff and greenkeepers is maintained at all times. Golf clubs and golfers have observed the lockdown very well and must keep it up and act responsibly as play resumes.

“The pandemic has already had a substantial impact on golf clubs and venues and the focus will soon turn to trying to recover from the crisis. As a group we will continue to do all we can to provide support and guidance in that effort.”

The Government has also said that tennis and basketball courts, as well as bowling greens, can also re-open.

Signed Heaney glove fetches over £300 for NHS

Number one Stoke boxer Nathan Heaney’s signed glove has been auctioned off for more than £300 – money that will go to the NHS as it continues to fight Covid-19.

The 31-year-old donated the glove to the Stoke City Community Trust who then put the item in and online auction that lasted until Friday evening.

The Trust announced that the winner had bid £310 for the prize.

Heaney, who is undefeated in all ten of his professional boxing bouts, promised that this winner would also receive a personally signed programme as a thank you for their generosity.

Heaney described the amount raised as “unbelievable”

“When a glove you signed raises £310 for charity… unbelievable,” he stated.

“I can’t thank everyone who bid on it enough, and particularly the person who won it.”

A spokesperson for the Stoke City Community Trust said: “Well, what can we say to Nathan Heaney? Thank you!

“Nathan has helped us raise £310 for the University Hospitals of North Midlands Charity by donating his signed glove. Thank you.”

Eccleshall Rugby Club announce new captain for first time in three years

Midlands 3 West outfit Eccleshall Rugby Club has named its new first team captain for 2020/21 campaign.

Back rower Zac Chadwick steps into the role, succeeding James Denning who steps down as skipper after three years of leading the team.

Chadwick has represented Staffordshire’s county side and has also captained the Midlands at “age grade level,” joining Eccleshall in 2017.

A spokesperson for the club stated: “Eccleshall RUFC are pleased to confirm that Zac Chadwick will be our 1 XV captain for the 2020/21 season.

“Zac is a combative back rower, also comfortable in the second row, who definitely leads from the front.

“While we may not know when the 2020/21 season will start, we do know that Zac and Coach Steve Dolphin will ensure that ERUFC will be ready for another Midlands 3 West league campaign.”

Eccleshall eventually finished 9th in the table last season after places were decided by a “best playing record formula” following the RFU’s decision to cancel the remainder of the season amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Para-athlete to cover 100 miles in a month in his wheelchair for the NHS

A para-athlete from Staffordshire is covering 100 miles across the month of June to raise funds for the NHS as it continues to battle the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Tennis player and shot-putter Gavin Yarwood from Leek is aiming to raise £1,000 for the service that has aided him during his lifetime.

“It’s all in aid of raising money for the NHS which is struggling under the weight of Covid-19,” he told Sport in Staffs.

“The NHS is one of the greatest organisations in the world, and it has helped me massively over the years.

“It cared for me in my darkest hours after a very serious accident I had in 1999. It has given me, and many others so much. Surely now is the time to give back.”

Gavin, who also plays the guitar and synth in an 80s tribute band called ‘Mixtape’, explained why he is taking on a feat of this kind for the first time in his life.

Gavin is now pushing himself to the limit to help those who have helped him throughout his life

“I’d seen the 5-kilometre Run For Heroes challenge that people were doing, and decided to give it a go. I started training last week and thought I’d just do a 1k, as it would be tough going in my wheelchair – I ended up doing 5.3k.

“It was tough, but I really got into it. Because of this, I thought of trying a bigger challenge.

“The ideas I had, started with doing 5k everyday for 2 weeks, then 50k in 2 months, then 100k in 2 months. Eventually, I settled on 100 miles in a month.

“The NHS is being pushed to the limit, so I’ve decided to push myself to the limit as well.”

Staffs FA CEO: Next season likely to have different format

Staffordshire FA Chief Executive Officer Adam Evans has stated that it is “likely” that the 2020/21 football season will be different to the usual format players, staff and fans are used to.

In an open letter to the county’s football community, Mr Evans stated: “We are in a time of great uncertainty and understand that you, like us, will have concerns about how and when it will be feasible to get back to playing the game that we all love.

“Simply put we don’t know at this point and whilst it is hoped that a positive message will be delivered by the Government this weekend, in reality the 2020/2021 season is likely to be different to the traditional format that we are all used to.”

He iterated that the organisation was in frequent liaison with the FA and commented on next campaign’s membership fees.

“It is important that we face these challenges together as a football community and I can assure you that there is a great deal of hard work going on in the background by our Board and remaining staff who are working on support packages to assist our members to return to the game.

Next season will probably look a little different to previous campaigns

“We are in constant communication with the Football Association who in turn are regularly receiving guidance from the Government in regard to grassroots sport moving forward.

“Our plans, including the membership fees for the new season, will be announced when there is more detail in regards (to) when we can start playing again and when it is appropriate and relevant to do so.”

Mr Evans urged clubs to seek the financial help they need through the various routes available such as the support offered by the Government, Sport England and the FA.

He continued: ‘It’s times like these when sport pales into insignificance given the horrendous situations that many have found themselves in as a result of this pandemic.

“We would encourage all clubs to review all of the financial support options being offered by various bodies.

“We are here to support the Staffordshire Football Community through this crisis and our reduced team remains ready to support where we can and if you require further assistance then please do not hesitate to contact us.”

He concluded: “Football will be back and we will get back to enjoying our game and the enrichment that it brings into all of our lives.”

Non-league clubs can now apply for pitch funding worth £1,500

Non-league, women’s and grassroots football clubs could potentially be in line for a £1,500 grant to maintain their stadium’s pitch thanks to a new £9.58 million fund set up by statutory bodies, with grassroots sides who have more than one pitch available to claim even more.

The Premier League, The FA, the Government and Sport England have joined together through the Football Foundation to launch the new ‘Pitch Preparation Fund’ – scheme that aims to support clubs and organisations for when football finally returns.

The body says that in order to gain access to this pot, an applicant must be either “a club or organisation with a minimum of 12 months’ security of tenure over the pitches they wish to improve by freehold, leasehold or licence, and have the legal responsibility for maintaining them.”

The following bodies are eligible for the fund: Grassroots football clubs (including Step 7); FA National League System clubs (from Steps 1 to 6); FA Women’s Pyramid clubs (Tier 1-5); County FAs; Professional Club Community Trusts; Leisure Trusts (with an annual turnover of less than 500k); and Welsh Premier League clubs.

The maximum grant value for the stadium pitch at a National League System Club (Step 1-6) and FA Women’s Pyramid outfit (Tier 1-5) is £1,500.

Eligible affiliated grassroots clubs and organisations (including step 7) that maintain one full-size pitch are also able to claim up to £1,500.

The fund comes at a time when many non-league clubs have lost vast amounts of revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic

Those with two or three full-size pitches may receive up to £2,500 while teams with four or more full-size pitches in line for funding up to £5,000.

The Football Foundation says 11-a-side and 9-a-side pitches are classed as ‘full-size’ pitches with a mini soccer pitch counting as “0.5 pitches.”

These grants are available to help cover the costs of maintenance such as turfing, weed killing and fertilising while clubs with a 3G pitch can put the money towards deep cleaning, FA Pitch Testing and other maintenance.

A spokesperson for the Football Foundation said: “Any work that has been completed since The FA suspended football on March 16, 2020 is eligible to be funded.

“We just ask that clubs provide evidence to demonstrate that their grant is going to be used towards their pitch preparation works – with auditing undertaken before December 31, 2020.

“In addition, we will ask you to carry out a digital assessment of your pitches using our ‘PitchPower’ app to better understand the quality of your playing surface.”

This scheme closes on Monday, May 25.

The undefeated middleweight, who so far has fought in ten professional bouts, stated: “I’ve donated a signed boxing glove to the Stoke City Community Trust to help raise money for the University Hospitals of North Midlands Charity.

Burslem Cricket Club to build new changing rooms

Staffordshire side Burslem Cricket Club is to commence work on extending its clubhouse and create new changing rooms after plans were given the go-ahead by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The North Staffordshire & South Cheshire League (NSSC) Premier Division outfit submitted an application which asked to erect a single storey extension to “form new changing rooms” in January with permission being granted for this last month.

Within the planning application, a consultation with Sport England said it raised no objection to the plans while a planning officer’s report recommended them for approval, concluding: “The proposal is considered to be acceptable in terms of design, amenity and highway safety and would deliver sustainable development in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework.”

Planning documents show where the extension will be

On Wednesday, Burslem Cricket Club stated: “We’ve today received the go ahead to extend the clubhouse to accommodate new changing rooms…the builders start on Monday.

“We should be ready for when the cricket starts.”

The club finished second in NSSC Division 1 last season meaning they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 2020 campaign.

Stone Rugby Club capture impressive duo

Staffordshire outfit Stone Rugby Club has strengthened its men’s first team roster further by capturing the signatures of two impressive players.

The latest recruit through the door is centre Danny Duggan. Described as a “combative runner and a real threat,” he has played for Macclesfield at national-league level before featuring for Stoke-on-Trent Rugby Club where he played alongside Stone head coach Tom Hughes.

Hughes said he was “really excited by this signing.” Duggan also offers versatility to the side as he can play at either centre or as a winger.

The club also revealed that prop Ryan Sturland will also be donning a Stone jersey in the 2020/21 campaign.

The club said it is “really lucky” to have attained the services of the 5ft 9′ powerhouse.

Stone will be hoping to reach new heights next season with a plethora of new signings

Elsewhere, in the women’s first team – Stone Roses – two key personnel have committed their futures to the club.

Stalwart Kate Meredith, who help set up the mini and junior section at Stone and also helped establish the Roses, has signed on again for next year.

A spokesperson for the club said that the flanker “works tirelessly behind the scenes for the club in so many ways” and that “it would be fair to say this lady isn’t just a valued Rose but so, so much more.”

Players Player of the Year for last season Megan Kent has also pledged to play for the Roses for the upcoming campaign.

The centre only picked up a competitive rugby ball for the first time six months ago but her performances have impressed many at the club.
